With a high number of smartphones constantly appearing on the market, it can be a daunting task to keep up to date with developments and changes in technology. No sooner have you bought your device than it is superseded almost instantly. Although it is impossible to always have the most recent phone on the market, you can prolong the life of your handset by making sure you buy the best that is available at the time.
Defining what is the best smartphone comes down to personal choice. Some users will opt for a smartphone which has the fastest processor, biggest storage and biggest screen while other users will opt for phones with the slickest and smoothest interface. Whatever your choice, you need to be happy with it as most cell phone providers will tie you into a contract for at least 12 months and it will prove costly to break your contract early if you do not like your handset.
Perhaps the most popular smartphone currently on the market is Apple’s iPhone 5. The iPhone is the handset that started the whole smartphone phenomenon in the mid 2000s. The main advantage of the iPhone is that it is supported by Apple’s app store which is home to more than 775,000 apps which have all been approved to ensure that you are buying quality. App developers tend to concentrate the majority of their development time to the iOS platform and will usually port their apps over to other platforms at a later date. This is a big advantage for the iPhone as a smartphone is only as good as the apps that run on it.
On the downside, the iPhone 5 was outdated before it was even released. The 4 inch screen is significantly smaller than that of its closest Android and Windows phone competitors. Apple’s decision to omit the NFC technology from the iPhone 5 is also seen as a backward step.
You may be surprised to read that Apple do not have the largest share of the smartphone market. Android handsets accounted for 68% of the market by the end of 2012. The leading manufacturer of Android smartphones are Samsung who are now the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer. Samsung’s current high end phone is the Galaxy S4. Although the S4 is not vastly different from the S3, it is still one of the most powerful smartphones currently on the market. With a five inch screen and 1.9 Ghz quad core processor, you will be hard pushed to find a handset with more raw power than the S4. With over 850,000 apps available via Google’s play store, you will never have to look far for any type of app that you require. While the S4 is a high quality handset, there is no real reason to upgrade if you currently own the S3 or any other high end handset that was purchased in 2012.
If you prefer to look further afield than Apple and Samsung, then look no further than the HTC One. Over the years, HTC have had a reputation for making high quality handsets, but without the marketing power of Apple and Samsung, these handsets haven’t done as well as they should have done. The HTC One is a 4.7 inch handset in a metal casing which is both elegant and robust. Running on the latest Android 4.2 (Jellybean) which is complimented by HTC Sense 5, the HTC One gives the user a smooth and effortless experience. Soon after its release in April 2013, the HTC One won many awards including the Computex smartphone of the year award. As the handset runs on Android, you will be able to enjoy the same number of apps as the Samsung Galaxy S4.
There are many other handsets on the market that will fit your budget and expectations but if you want the very best of the best then any of the three handsets listed above should be on your shopping list.
